In March 1907, Purcell was reached by the Oklahoma Central Railway (OCR), which was to connect the Lehigh coal mines in Chickasha, and was the terminus of the ATSF - owned by the Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe railroads. The construction of a bridge in 1938 allowed the community to reach its first station at the intersection of South 3rd Street and South 2nd Street. In the 1950s, the facility was renamed Purcell Municipal Airport in memory of William "Bill" Purce, a former Purcells High School student who became a US pilot and flight instructor and died in the Iraq War.
Purcell was the only town within the Unassigned Lands boundaries and began attracting hopeful settlers even before the land grab of 1889.
It is currently undergoing major improvements and revitalization, and construction of a new hotel, the Chickasaw Hotel and Convention Center, will begin in the summer of 2020, at a total cost of $1.2 million.
